"The most relaxing thing in the world is sipping a cup of tea by yourself."

Can you share your earliest memory of drinking tea and how it made you feel?

Growing up, proper tea wasn’t really a part of my world. But I do remember there always being a pitcher of sweet tea in my dad's fridge, and I absolutely loved it.

What role does tea play in your daily life or routines?

I brew a mug of tea in moments when I need to slow down and take a minute to myself. Sometimes it’s in the middle of the day, sometimes at night. I think the most relaxing thing in the world is sipping a cup of tea by yourself.

Is there a particular tea or tea moment that holds special meaning for you? Why?

It was when I visited the UK for the first time in 2019 that I really got acquainted with tea and the sort of traditions that goes with it. I was staying with a family in Manchester for Christmas, and before I had even gotten out of bed to brush my teeth, my friend’s dad was putting a cup of tea in my hand. He made it really milky with no sugar, so that's how I drink mine now.

How has your relationship with tea evolved over the years?

As I get older and caffeine affects me more, I’ve definitely started opting for herbal or green teas. The days of drinking black tea at night are long gone.

If you could share a cup of tea with anyone—past, present, or fictional—who would it be, and why?

Queen Victoria. I imagine she had quite an exquisite collection of tea sets that I would love to see.

When you have a free day with nothing on the calendar, what do you find yourself doing?

I’d first allow myself to sleep in without any guilt. Then I’d visit a bakery, peruse the shelves of a used bookstore, and read in the park.

Is there anyone working in writing that you’re inspired by, that you wish more people know about?

My friend Julianna Salguero is one of the most talented writers I know. She has a Substack called Keepsake that is one of the most tender, thought-provoking, inspiring corners of the internet.
